Dress-up Party
Dress-up Party posed myself (HB) as a documenter and collaborator inside the closet and minds of four friends: Haeryn Kim (HK), Sandy Kelso (SK), Matilde Battisti (MB), and Klara Fokicheva (KF). The Dress-up Parties encouraged a nostalgic and unapologetic mode of play, often left behind in adult lives; to dress up for
no particular occasion, to play make- believe. The wardrobe became the container of a world without limitation, creating a safe space for our minds to wander, leading to playful and heartfelt conversations surrounding dress. Just for an afternoon, we adorned the garb of an alternate self; for some, this meant choosing a piece of clothing that is loved but never worn, while others transformed themselves into mystical beings.
HB: Wait, I love those! Why do you never wear those? MB: I don’t know! I lost an earring, a big hoop. Maybe my flatmate has them.
*Looks for earrings*
She does.
HB: What about the glasses?
SK: Well, I don’t know because it’s sleep time...
HB: But for some reason, you have your fancy shoes on? SK: Obviously!
KF: Alright, let’s go into the hallway for this one. She’s my favorite (outfit) and I was like, what! This would relate! KF: She (the head piece) should stand! She needs to be standing!
*Muffled laughter*
KF: Now where did I put my skull?
*picks up beaver skull with butter orange teeth*
HK: I think I wore this backwards...well now it’s fucking sheer and I hate it! I want it to be more bloody.
HK: Mmmhmmmm...my neighbour’s probably looking through the window like what in the fucking hell is happening in there!?
*Laughrter*
HB: Oh, we should probably pause the recording.
